A Review of Issues and Cautions for Patients
By: Peter J. Embi, MD, MS

Contents:   Introduction

E-mail communication between patients and health care providers holds a lot of promise, but is also fraught with risk. Though a potentially efficient and flexible means of communication, there are many factors to consider prior to using this convenient form of communication with your health-care provider.

Several articles and guidelines have been published to help health-care providers and health-care systems deal with the many issues surrounding the use of E-mail communication with patients. However, very little general information has been written specifically for patients. This web site will hopefully begin to fill that void.

While the decision to communicate with your health care provider is one that only you two can make together, I hope that this review of the key issues will help you through the process.
